THE ICE(MAN) COMETH...

ICE cometh and it could be trouble for your company if you’re not prepared.  As part of its shift in strategy, ICE is going after employers instead of undocumented workers.

According to a statement issued by DHS, on July 1, 2009, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) served 652 businesses nationwide with Notices of Inspection (NOI) for an official Form I-9 audit. The 652 businesses were selected for the Notices of Inspection "as a result of leads and information obtained through other investigative means."

This latest action by ICE signifies an increase in the federal government's efforts to inspect employer and hiring documentation.

These leads and information could possibly stem from information from other regulatory agencies (DOL, EEOC, OSHA), or simply disgruntled former employees.  There is a very strong correlation between Social Security Administration  (SSA) no-match letters.

This nationwide effort is a first step in ICE¹s long-term strategy to address and deter illegal employment, said U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS. As part of its shift in strategy, ICE is going after employers instead of undocumented workers!

HR needs to exhibit leadership in the field of corporate immigration compliance. Often immigration compliance is not overseen by any specific key person at companies and frequently is not on the radar of upper management. It is up to HR to put this on the map and bring it up as a real issue.

Integrity can assist you by providing  lead person to spearhead immigration compliance at your company and adopt an immigration compliance policy that incorporates the recommended ICE best practices.

           Save Energy, Save Money

lightbulb.jpgAt home, many of us have begun to manage the use of water, electricity, and gasoline in hopes of making every penny count. Taking the same initiative at work is increasingly important, as economic hardship has hit everywhere. Reducing the cost of your company’s utility bills can have a significant impact on the company’s operating budget by reducing overhead costs.

  • Turn computers off before going home on weekdays and weekends. This can save $34 per year per computer. Save even more money by turning your computer off during lunch.  Computers produce heat, so turning them off will also reduce building cooling loads.
  • If you cannot turn off your computer, try turning off the monitor. Did you know that your screen saver does NOT reduce energy used by your monitor?
  • Unplug microwaves, toasters, coffee makers, and other break room equipment when not in used. Each year, Americans spend more money powering turned off equipment than they do when they are in use. Try connecting the break room appliances to a surge protector that can easily be unplugged.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room for more than five minutes.
  • During these hot summers, try to set the air conditioning to a higher temperature and turn on a fan. Fans make you feel cooler by creating a wind chill effect and use less electricity than air conditioners. Turn fans off when not in the office. Fans do not cool rooms they only cool people.
  • Do not cool rooms that don’t need it, doing so only wastes money. Close doors to closets and offices that no one is using. Set the thermostat to 80 degrees for the entire building on nights and weekends.
  • Make sure faucets are completely closed. Dripping water can waste thousands of gallons of water per year. Do not leave toilets, water fountains or faucets running.
